Joyous celebrations have broken out in Tel Aviv and Khan Yunis as reports confirm that Israel and Hamas have reached an initial agreement to halt the ongoing conflict in Gaza. However, experts caution that a challenging road lies ahead for both parties after a devastating two-year war.
The deal is anticipated to lead to the release of 48 Israeli hostages, although the status of over half of them remains uncertain. The situation and well-being of these captives are currently unknown. Meanwhile, the people of Gaza are engulfed in profound sorrow.
Estimates suggest that approximately 10,000 unidentified bodies may still be buried under the ruins in Gaza, in addition to the tragic loss of 67,000 Palestinian lives during the conflict.
Despite global hopes for lasting peace, concerns linger over the fragility of the agreement. Security expert Professor Anthony Glees has expressed apprehension that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will persist in his leadership ambitions even after the Gaza ceasefire, alongside his two associates, referred to as “evil crackpots.”
Professor Glees, from the University of Buckingham, highlighted the imminent approval of Phase One of the agreement by the Israeli cabinet. He mentioned that Qatar and Turkey, acting as mediators, have informed Hamas that Israel will cease hostilities upon ratification. He also indicated that Netanyahu’s allies, Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir, are expected to retain their positions, ensuring Netanyahu’s leadership for the time being.
Regarding the tragic events, Professor Glees emphasized the significance of not forgetting the heinous attack of October 7, 2023, and the large number of Palestinian casualties. He also criticized the actions of Israeli settlers in the West Bank supported by Netanyahu’s government.
While the ceasefire has been eagerly awaited, its implementation has been postponed until evening with ongoing bombings in Gaza. The initial phase involves the withdrawal of Israeli forces from approximately 70% of Gaza and the subsequent release of Palestinian prisoners post-hostage handovers.
