Theresa May criticizes Kemi Badenoch’s proposal to dismantle the UK’s climate strategies, labeling it a “disastrous error.” The dispute within the Conservative party emerged as the party leader announced intentions to revoke the groundbreaking Climate Change Act established by the previous Labour government in 2008, aiming to reduce climate emissions by 80% by 2050.
Before stepping down as Prime Minister in 2019, May enhanced the Act’s targets to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In response to Badenoch’s plans, May expressed deep disappointment, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the longstanding consensus on climate action across political parties and the scientific community.
Highlighting the UK’s leadership in addressing climate change, May stressed the necessity of safeguarding the planet for future generations and enabling businesses to develop solutions for the pressing environmental challenges.
Former Cabinet minister Alok Sharma, previously the Cop26 President, also cautioned against the proposed changes, warning of potential adverse impacts on investments and job opportunities in the UK. Badenoch defended her stance by denouncing what she termed as ineffective climate targets set by Labour, asserting the need to protect the environment without jeopardizing the nation’s financial stability. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband criticized the move as “desperate” and warned of the economic repercussions, echoing scientists’ calls for urgent action to limit global temperature rise to below 1.5C compared to pre-industrial levels.
