Former Spice Girl member Melanie C, Shaznay Lewis from All Saints, and Ashley Roberts of Pussycat Dolls are teaming up with a Hollywood actress to establish a dream girl band. Actress Rebel Wilson is spearheading a new movie project that will showcase this supergroup formation.
The group will also include popular television personality Sheridan Smith, known for her recent role in the ITV series “I Fought The Law.” Together, the five musicians will portray a band named Girlfriends in an upcoming major film.
The movie, directed by Rebel Wilson, features her as a pop star who gets ousted from her group’s reunion tour and is mandated to perform community service. In a bid for a comeback, she mentors a group of unconventional teenage girls for a significant audition aiming to secure a record deal with a top label.
However, as expected in cinematic storytelling, the plan encounters obstacles. As she pushes the teens beyond their limits, she must confront the challenges of a toxic music industry and her personal struggles simultaneously.
Titled “Girl Group,” the comedy has commenced filming in the United Kingdom, as reported by Deadline. Rebel Wilson describes it as the “ultimate girl power movie,” expressing her excitement for a project akin to the “Pitch Perfect” series. She envisions “Girl Group” as a lively, engaging film that will have audiences singing and dancing out of the theaters.
Rebel Wilson hopes for a smoother experience with this project compared to her previous directorial venture. Her film “The Deb,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, remains unreleased due to a legal dispute between the Australian star and the British producers.
In another upcoming project, Rebel Wilson will appear in Sky’s Original Cinema Christmas film “Tinsel Town” later this year alongside Kiefer Sutherland and Danny Dyer. Sutherland portrays Bradley Mack, a failed action star who finds himself in a quaint snowy village participating in a unique production of “Cinderella,” where he bonds with quirky locals, including the straightforward choreographer Jill, played by Wilson.
Rebel Wilson fulfilled her pop star aspirations at the Reading Festival this summer by surprising fans with an on-stage performance with The Kooks. The audience cheered as she joined the band, humorously suggesting a rendition of “Gangsta’s Paradise” before seamlessly rapping along with their performance.
