A tragic incident unfolded during a family vacation when a mother of two, Judy Kay Zagorski, 57, from Michigan, lost her life in a bizarre accident involving a giant stingray. The unfortunate event occurred while Judy and her family were on a boat excursion in the Florida Keys.
The incident occurred near Marathon on Vaca Key’s Atlantic Ocean side in the spring of 2008. Judy was seated at the front of the boat, cruising at approximately 25 mph, when a 75-pound spotted eagle ray, boasting a wingspan of about six feet, unexpectedly leaped out of the water, striking her in the face and causing her to fall backward onto the boat’s floor.
Authorities confirmed that Judy did not sustain any puncture wounds from the ray’s venomous barbs. The sheer impact of the collision resulted in fatal injuries. The medical examiner for Monroe County determined that Judy succumbed instantly to blunt force trauma, suffering multiple skull fractures and direct brain trauma. Notably, she was not stung by the ray.
Judy’s sister, Joyce Ann Miller, who was nearby, escaped unscathed. Their father, Virgil Bouck, was operating the boat at the time, with their mother, Verneta, also present as the family enjoyed a spring holiday together.
Following the tragedy, the ray also perished in the boat. Wildlife authorities categorized the incident as a rare occurrence, as spotted eagle rays are typically non-aggressive and only deploy their venomous tail barbs for self-defense purposes. These rays are known to leap out of the water to evade threats or rid themselves of parasites, with human collisions being exceedingly rare.
Spotted eagle rays can reach weights of up to 500 pounds and boast wingspans of up to ten feet. Protected under Florida law, they generally peacefully swim near the ocean’s surface.
Judy’s untimely death has shocked both residents and visitors. Describing her as an exceptional sister, Judy’s brother, Dan Bouck, highlighted her volunteer work with terminally ill patients and her management of Beadle Bay Marina and Campground with her late husband, Steve Zagorski.
Experts stress that such accidents are highly unusual, with rare instances of rays landing in boats previously reported, but fatalities being extremely uncommon.
