The introduction of usernames aims to provide users with an alternative to sharing personal phone numbers, enabling more privacy in communication.
The upcoming feature will enhance the privacy of group conversations, particularly in community chats or social groups, where users can engage without immediately disclosing their phone numbers to unknown individuals. WhatsApp has announced that users can now reserve their preferred usernames in advance of the full launch. Due to the extensive user base, securing usernames early is crucial to avoid missing out on preferred names.
To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. The rollout of this feature will occur gradually in the following months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames become accessible in their respective regions.
