“ZZ Top Drummer Frank Beard Dies at 77”

Frank Beard, the drummer of ZZ Top, known for hits like “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” has passed away at the age of 77. Beard died at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, while under hospice care, surrounded by his family. ZZ Top co-founder and guitarist Billy Gibbons, along with bassist Elwood Francis, mourned the loss of Beard, highlighting his talent and contribution to the band over six decades.

ZZ Top, a Texas boogie-rock trio, achieved immense success with over 50 million records sold, six No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, and three Grammy Award nominations. In a statement, Gibbons emphasized Beard’s crucial role in maintaining the band’s signature sound and expressed the band’s commitment to continue as per Beard’s wishes.

Forming in 1969, Beard, originally from Frankston, Texas, met Gibbons in a band called The Moving Sidewalks and later introduced Dusty Hill, the bassist, and vocalist. ZZ Top drew inspiration from blues legends like Z.Z. Hill, Cream, and Jimmy Reed, maintaining their original lineup and distinctive appearance with long beards and dark sunglasses.

ZZ Top’s music, known for its witty lyrics, featured in various Hollywood movies, showcasing their unique blend of rock, blues, and funk. Their breakout hit, “La Grange,” paid homage to a Texas brothel and exemplified their iconic sound. The band’s evolution, especially with the 1983 album “Eliminator,” introduced more production elements while retaining their core style, leading to hits like “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Legs,” and “Sharp-Dressed Man.”

The band’s trademark beards were a result of a casual decision during a break in 1976, turning into a lasting image for ZZ Top. Their music videos, featuring models and custom cars, became popular on MTV, adding to their rock-chic appeal. Over the years, ZZ Top embraced humor and entertainment in their performances, setting them apart from other bands.

In 2012, producer Rick Rubin revitalized ZZ Top’s sound with the album “La Futura,” marking a successful comeback. Beard’s passing follows the death of Dusty Hill in 2021, and his temporary departure from the band in 2025 due to health issues. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Meredith, and three children.
