“Gigaclear Faces Collapse Amid £1 Billion Debt Crisis”

Gigaclear, a leading UK broadband provider, is facing imminent collapse as it struggles with debts exceeding £1 billion. Despite serving over 160,000 customers, the company has encountered financial difficulties after failing to attract sufficient buyer interest.

Following a failed cash injection from shareholder Equitix in 2023, Gigaclear finds itself under significant financial strain, prompting creditors to take over to address the mounting debt. Initially praised for its innovative full-fibre network in rural England, Gigaclear’s ambitious plans have faltered in a fiercely competitive market.

Ernest Doku, a telecommunications expert at Uswitch, previously lauded Gigaclear as part of a new wave of disruptive providers offering faster speeds and competitive pricing, challenging traditional players reliant on legacy infrastructure. However, the company has been forced to downsize and restructure operations due to various challenges, including escalating costs and interest rates.

Notable creditors, including the UK taxpayer-backed National Wealth Fund, NatWest, and Lloyds, are poised to assume control of Gigaclear, a move reported by the Financial Times. Despite these challenges, Gigaclear’s CEO, Nathan Rundle, expressed optimism about securing £80 million in new funding to expand the network to one million UK homes.

In response to the situation, a Gigaclear spokesperson affirmed that existing stakeholders remain supportive and that the company is actively exploring options to ensure its long-term viability and the best possible outcome for all involved.
