“UK Government Warns of Post-Christmas Cyberattack Risk”

The government is cautioning households about the increased risk of cyberattacks during the post-Christmas period. With the influx of ‘smart’ devices received as Christmas gifts, along with the existing array of internet-connected gadgets in UK homes, such as smart speakers, fitness trackers, security cameras, fridges, thermostats, kettles, washing machines, and toys, there is a concern about potential security vulnerabilities.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a division of GCHQ, has highlighted the threat posed by insecure devices that could be exploited by criminals to infiltrate a household’s network or launch cyber attacks. Recent analysis of connected homes revealed an average of 10 attacks every 24 hours, with security measures blocking around 1,736 threats per minute.

Following this, the government is urging households to take a few minutes to enhance their security measures by setting up two-step verification for new device accounts and enabling automatic updates. Baroness Lloyd, the Cyber Security Minister, emphasized the importance of securing smart devices to safeguard families and create memorable Christmas moments.

NCSC’s director for national resilience, Jonathon Ellison, advised ensuring robust security measures when setting up new smart devices to protect personal information and homes. The government asserts that the UK is at the forefront of safeguarding families against cyber threats, attributing this to regulations mandating basic security standards for all smart devices sold in the country, including the prohibition of default or easily guessable passwords.

In addition, a festive security checklist is recommended to enhance cybersecurity measures and protect households during the holiday season.
