President Trump has issued orders for troops to utilize ‘full force’ against demonstrators in a different American city. Alleging a focus on “domestic terrorists,” the planned deployment targets individuals protesting the conduct and sometimes aggressive strategies of immigration officers in Portland, Oregon.
Trump, through his Truth Social platform, declared the move as crucial to safeguard Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities, which he depicted as being “under siege from attack by Antifa and other domestic terrorists.”
The term “Antifa,” originally referring to anti-fascists, has been repurposed and misapplied by the Trump administration as if it were an actual organization with members and leaders. Trump has even labeled Antifa a ‘domestic terror’ group, raising concerns that he might use this classification to forcefully suppress any opposition to him and his policies.
The White House did not promptly respond to inquiries regarding details of Trump’s declaration, including the deployment timeline or the specific troops involved. Earlier, Trump had threatened to deploy the National Guard to Chicago but did not follow through.
An expected deployment of around 150 troops in Memphis, Tennessee, is anticipated, significantly fewer than those dispatched to Washington D.C. during Trump’s crackdown or to Los Angeles in response to immigration protests. Requests for information from Pentagon officials remained unanswered.
Following the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, Trump has escalated efforts to combat what he deems the “radical left,” blaming them for the country’s political violence issues. He had previously mobilized the National Guard and active-duty Marines to Los Angeles as part of his law enforcement initiatives in the nation’s capital.
The ICE facility in Portland has frequently been the site of protests, at times resulting in violent confrontations. Some federal agents sustained injuries, and multiple protesters faced assault charges. A recent incident involving the erection of a guillotine prompted the Department of Homeland Security to denounce the act as “unhinged behavior.”
During comments in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump hinted at an impending operation. He vowed to take significant action against individuals in Portland, labeling them as “professional agitators and anarchists.”
