A young boy was declared deceased after being discovered unconscious and not breathing at his residence just prior to 5pm on Friday, October 3.
Authorities found the child, Anthony Casey, following a 911 call from a low-cost housing complex in Brooklyn around 5pm on the same day, as per the New York Police Department.
The one-year-old sustained blunt force trauma to his midsection, as confirmed by the medical examiner. Consequently, the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner classified Casey’s passing as a homicide, as reported by the Daily News.
Despite this determination, no arrests have been made, and the occurrence remains subject to investigation.
In a separate incident, a couple passed away in scalding water, leaving their child orphaned shortly after their anniversary. Ana Carolina Silva, 41, and Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, 37, from Brazil, were found lifeless in a motel bathtub with a temperature of 50C.
As per local news outlet Globo G1, a toxicology report unveiled elevated alcohol levels and traces of cocaine. Sixteen forensic examinations conducted by the Civil Police ruled out potential causes of death like electric shock, drowning, carbon monoxide poisoning, or foul play.
As part of the inquiry, authorities scrutinized the motel room, the couple’s vehicle, and reviewed CCTV footage. Brazil’s Chief Medical Examiner, Andressa Boer Fronza, stated that “The cause of both deaths was exogenous poisoning, contributing to heatstroke with severe dehydration, thermal collapse, resulting in organ failure and demise.”
Chief of Police Felipe Simão Gomes remarked, “Taking into account the circumstances and substances found on the bodies, the Civil Police concluded that the deaths were sudden and not the result of external interference.”
Jefferson and Ana Carolina, who had been together for almost two decades, were described by acquaintances as caring parents and sociable individuals. Police noted no history of violence in their relationship.
Concerns arose when the couple’s relatives reported them missing after they failed to pick up their daughter. Following a celebration for their daughter’s fourth birthday at a food park, they left her with caretakers and proceeded to a nightclub.
Allegedly, the couple dropped off their daughter at Jeferson’s sister’s residence before checking into the Dallas Motel in São José, Brazil, shortly after midnight.
A missing persons inquiry was initiated, leading to the discovery of their deceased bodies in the bathroom. Medical professionals determined that they succumbed to heatstroke and organ failure.
Investigators disclosed that Jeferson, a military police officer, and Ana Carolina, a nail salon proprietor, lost consciousness in 50C water with a space heater operating. Family members harbor suspicions regarding the circumstances of their demise.
