“Students Demand Universal Free School Meals Nationwide”

A ten-year-old student expressed to Keir Starmer that his proposal for free school meals falls short, advocating for universal eligibility for primary school children. Lily, a student at Monksdown primary school in Liverpool, emphasized the necessity of free lunches, stating they are essential rather than optional. She highlighted the disparity in access to free meals, pointing out that children in London, Wales, and Scotland receive them while others do not.

Collaborating with the National Education Union (NEU), The Mirror has long campaigned for free school meals for all primary school students. Although Keir Starmer introduced a plan to extend free school meals to all children in Universal Credit families in England, Lily believes every child nationwide should benefit from this provision.

Lily, distributing leaflets at the conference, stressed the importance of free school meals in alleviating parental stress and promoting children’s health and well-being. She expressed frustration that children in Liverpool do not have the same access as those in other regions.

Another student, Kayden, 15, from Bank View school in Liverpool, echoed Lily’s sentiments, advocating for equal access to free lunches like those in London and Wales. His teacher, Jenn Loughlin, emphasized the importance of providing balanced meals to all children to prevent hunger.

Zack, 11, from Holy Name school, also emphasized the positive impact of free school meals on children’s academic performance. Ann-Marie Ferrigan, a teacher at Monksdown primary school, criticized the limited expansion of free school meals to Universal Credit families, highlighting the ongoing struggles faced by working parents just above the eligibility threshold.

Daniel Kebede, the NEU’s general secretary, reiterated the call for universal free school meals to eliminate the stigma associated with poverty. He also urged for the removal of the two-child benefit limit to address the rising child poverty rates affecting educational outcomes.

The students’ passionate advocacy for universal free school meals underscores the pressing need to ensure all children have equal access to this vital support.
