Toronto Woman Embraces Caregiving Journey for Autistic Brother

Simone Abrahamsohn, a Toronto resident, recently faced a significant life change, losing her mother and taking on the role of her older brother’s primary caregiver. Juggling this responsibility while fostering a harmonious living situation for two middle-aged neurodivergent siblings has presented its challenges.

Abrahamsohn’s brother, Stuart, is autistic and a survivor of a left-brain stem stroke, requiring specialized care such as being handfed due to a hand tremor, assistance with transfers, bathing, grooming, and emotional support. Stuart’s emotional lability and sensitivity to loud noises add complexity to their living dynamics.

Reflecting on their childhood, Abrahamsohn recalls feeling embarrassed by Stuart’s behaviors, such as stimming and introversion, which led to misunderstandings and hurtful comments from others. Despite these challenges, she acknowledges their similarities, with her own struggles of managing ADHD through masking and emotional regulation.

In their shared living space, Abrahamsohn navigates accommodating Stuart’s needs and sensitivities, adjusting her own behaviors to maintain a peaceful environment. She emphasizes the importance of mutual respect and understanding, striving to empower Stuart in decision-making and daily choices.

While relinquishing personal pursuits like acting classes due to caregiving responsibilities, Abrahamsohn finds fulfillment in their evolving relationship and the opportunity to support her brother. Through coordination with external caregivers and a positive mindset, she aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment for both siblings.

The journey of caregiving has allowed Abrahamsohn to deepen her connection with Stuart and rectify past regrets, embracing this second chance to be a supportive and attentive sibling in their unique circumstances.
