Priscilla Presley recently shared details of her initial intimate encounter with music legend Elvis Presley. The event took place on September 13, 1959, when Priscilla, then only 14 years old, met the 24-year-old Elvis at a gathering hosted at his rented residence in West Germany during his military service stint.
Reports suggest that Elvis felt uneasy and self-conscious in Priscilla’s presence during their first meeting when she was in ninth grade. Despite the age difference, the duo became inseparable until Elvis departed Germany in March 1960. They maintained communication and eventually reunited in 1962 when Priscilla’s parents permitted her to visit Elvis in Los Angeles for a fortnight.
Their reunion came with stringent conditions; Elvis had to cover the expenses for a first-class round trip, and Priscilla always needed a chaperone, terms to which he acquiesced. Additionally, she had to correspond with her parents daily. A year later, just before turning 18, Priscilla was allowed to relocate to Memphis permanently.
Elvis and Priscilla tied the knot, with her living close to his home, Graceland, and eventually moving in there in May 1963. In her revealing memoir, “Softly, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis,” Priscilla disclosed details about their first sexual encounter.
“While our relationship began when I was fourteen, it didn’t evolve into a romantic one until I turned seventeen,” Priscilla wrote. “We chose to wait until our marriage when I was twenty-one to consummate our relationship. The age gap of ten years between us was undeniable.”
Reflecting on the societal norms of the time, Priscilla mentioned the reasoning behind their significant age difference. She highlighted the belief that older men were deemed better husbands due to their maturity and stability. Moreover, she noted that in the Southern culture, it was customary for men to marry younger women to facilitate their role as household heads, guiding their wives’ conduct and viewpoints.
Priscilla recounted her ex-husband’s expectations, describing how Elvis envisioned his partner as constantly beautiful, submissive, and charming. She shared anecdotes of maintaining her appearance even while he slept and striving to meet his demands, including her lack of culinary skills due to the staff at Graceland taking care of household duties.
Despite rumors of infidelity surrounding Elvis, Priscilla chose not to question him and was expected to trust his actions. In a separate part of her memoir, Priscilla delved into the challenges that led to the breakdown of their marriage, attributing it to Elvis’s insecurities and attempts to assert dominance in their relationship.
