Rachel Reeves had to momentarily halt her keynote address at the Labour Party conference due to a confrontation with a pro-Palestine protester. The disruption occurred when the protester shouted about the alleged mistreatment of Palestinians during the live event.
In response to the protester’s outburst, Reeves acknowledged the cause being advocated for and reiterated the party’s recognition of a Palestinian state. She emphasized that the Labour Party is now a governing entity rather than a party solely focused on protest activities.
Outside the conference venue in Liverpool, a sizable gathering of demonstrators demanded an end to arms sales to Israel. The protester who disrupted the event, identified as “Sam P” and associated with Palestine Youth Movement and London for a Free Palestine, raised concerns about the UK’s continued support for Israel amidst ongoing conflicts in the region.
Following the incident, security escorted the disruptor out of the premises, and Merseyside Police took over the situation. This disruption took place shortly after Keir Starmer announced the UK’s formal recognition of a Palestinian state in response to the failure of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address critical demands.
Starmer condemned the violence and suffering in Gaza caused by Israeli military actions, labeling them as intolerable. Reeves, addressing the disruption, reiterated the party’s stance on recognizing a Palestinian state and highlighted the tangible changes the Labour Party has been implementing while in power.
Reeves received applause from the audience in the conference hall for her response to the protester.
