“British Tourist Dies at Blue Lagoon, Malta”

A tragic incident occurred at the renowned Blue Lagoon in Comino, Malta, where a 43-year-old British tourist lost his life after jumping into the sea from a pleasure boat slide. The tourist encountered difficulties in the turquoise waters around 1:30 pm on Tuesday. Observant holidaymakers noticed him struggling underwater and promptly brought him to the surface, initiating CPR. Despite their efforts, the man was declared deceased at the hospital.

Following the incident, an investigation was launched by Magistrate Brigitte Sultana. Emergency responders from Malta’s Emergency Response and Rescue Corps quickly arrived at the scene, transporting the victim to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo. Despite receiving medical attention from paramedics, the man was pronounced dead upon arrival at Victoria Hospital.

This unfortunate event marks the 13th drowning fatality in Malta this year, with the third occurring in Comino, a popular tourist destination. Notably, a similar tragedy unfolded last month when a 35-year-old Italian man faced difficulties at the Blue Lagoon. Additionally, in April, the body of a 71-year-old fisherman was discovered off the coast of Comino a few hours after being reported missing.

In a separate incident, a Spanish tourist met a tragic fate after being struck by a propeller while boarding a boat in Comino. Sustaining severe injuries in July, she succumbed to her wounds later on.

Regrettably, maritime accidents leading to fatalities are not uncommon, with 14 recorded deaths in 2024 according to police reports. Despite its popularity, safety concerns have surrounded the Blue Lagoon, particularly regarding its natural ecosystems.

Addressing safety protocols, the Blue Lagoon’s website emphasizes the presence of lifeguards ensuring visitor safety. However, it warns about strong currents on certain days and advises swimmers to heed the guidance of lifeguards and monitor flag signals.

In a bid to enhance safety measures, Maltese authorities unveiled the ‘Blue Lagoon Rehabilitation: Balancing Nature and Experience’ project. The initiative includes expanding the swimming area by approximately 5,600 square meters, relocating kiosks along the shoreline, constructing a 200-meter walkway, and repositioning boat docking areas to maintain a safe distance from swimming zones.
