“Deputy Headteacher Disqualified for Sending Sexual Messages to Minor”

A deputy headteacher has been permanently disqualified from teaching after a disciplinary hearing for sending inappropriate messages of a sexual nature to a minor.

Laura Hamblin, an English teacher and safeguarding lead, was apprehended by authorities in March 2024 for suspected communication with a child. During the period of March 21 to March 29, 2024, she exchanged WhatsApp messages and voice notes containing explicit content with a particularly vulnerable student.

Following legal proceedings, Hamblin received a suspended sentence, a sexual harm prevention order, and a 10-year inclusion in the sex offenders’ register. The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) assembled a panel recently, deciding to ban her from teaching indefinitely. It was disclosed that she resigned from her position last September.

The TRA panel scrutinized approximately 1,500 pages of communication between Hamblin and the student, which was deemed detrimental by the judge. The messages escalated to flirtatious and eventually evolved into explicit sexual exchanges.

The panel found that Hamblin had seriously violated the expected code of conduct for a teacher and abused her position of authority. Additionally, she instructed the student to delete the messages in an attempt to conceal their interactions.

In court, the judge noted that Hamblin, by engaging in inappropriate behavior, had broken the trust of the student and caused significant distress. The consequences of her actions impacted the student’s education and emotional well-being, affecting both the student and their family.

The teaching panel concluded that a reevaluation of the ban was unwarranted given the circumstances. The school where Hamblin previously worked emphasized their commitment to student safety, promptly suspending her upon learning of the allegations and cooperating with law enforcement.
