Canada has announced sanctions against five senior Iranian officials for their involvement in activities in the Strait of Hormuz that threaten international peace. The move aims to uphold freedom of navigation in the strait, crucial for global trade and energy security, and to deter actions that jeopardize these principles.
The sanctioned individuals, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have been identified for their roles in activities that have posed a threat to the vital international waterway. The officials facing sanctions are Ali Abdollahi, Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Ebrahim Azizi, Shahram Irani, and Hamid Hosseini.
Canada’s latest actions bring the total number of individuals and entities sanctioned across Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic sectors to 232 and 260, respectively.
The sanctions come amidst efforts to reach a peace agreement between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, which have faced challenges since the conflict began in February. President Donald Trump has vacillated between threats of escalation and claims of an impending peace deal, while Iran has sought to leverage control over the strait to influence Washington.
Canada, along with other countries, has called on Iran to cease blocking the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping and expressed readiness to contribute to reopening the waterway.
