A member of the influential Alberta Prosperity Project, a group advocating for Alberta’s separation, has stepped down following the use of a racial slur at an event where the group unveiled a draft constitution for an independent Alberta.
During the event, organized by the “Stay Free Alberta” citizen initiative petition, members of the Black Hat Gang from Medicine Hat were acknowledged for their contributions to the plan. Ian Parkinson, introduced as a co-writer of the draft constitution named the “Foundation of Freedom,” made derogatory remarks regarding individuals wearing cultural or religious headdresses.
In response to the incident, Mitch Sylvestre, the leader of the Alberta Prosperity Project, announced Parkinson’s immediate resignation from the group, emphasizing that his comments were not endorsed or tolerated. The Black Hat Gang, associated with Parkinson, had previously engaged with government officials to propose a new document outlining Albertans’ rights.
Parkinson’s comment drew criticism from various quarters, including Keith Wilson of Let Alberta Decide, who denounced the remark for tarnishing the separatist movement’s reputation. The draft constitution, titled the “Foundation of Freedom,” has faced backlash for its proposals, such as the creation of an oversight branch of government and the election, rather than appointment, of judges in an independent Alberta.
Despite efforts to distance themselves, Wilson and other separatist leaders have been associated with the draft constitution. The lack of consensus among separatists highlights ongoing divisions within the movement, with disagreements over the proposed document’s viability and readiness.
As the referendum approaches, the separatist camp faces challenges in presenting a unified plan for Alberta’s potential independence. Political observers, like Jared Wesley, underscore the need for a clear strategy as Albertans prepare to vote on October 19.
