German intelligence has revealed potential discussions within the Kremlin regarding a potential attack on NATO, according to a statement from a high-ranking EU defense official. European Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, emphasized the need for Europe to be vigilant in defending itself against potential threats from Russia, drawing attention to Ukraine’s utilization of drones as a strategic example.
During an interview with the Polish publication, Wyborcza, Kubilius highlighted the importance of taking seriously the signals indicating a possible attack being discussed by the Kremlin. He stressed the necessity for readiness in the face of such threats, urging a proactive approach to learn from both Ukrainian and Russian experiences.
The escalating tensions between Russia and Western nations have been underscored by recent exchanges between Putin and Trump, where both sides have accused each other of military inadequacies. Putin criticized NATO allies for stoking fears of an attack and providing support to Ukraine, while Trump questioned Russia’s prolonged conflict with Ukraine.
Incursions into NATO airspace, believed by some to be orchestrated by Russia as a form of testing, have been on the rise. Notably, a recent incident involving Russian drones breaching Polish airspace led to NATO aircraft intercepting and downing some of the drones, marking a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia since the start of the conflict with Ukraine.
In a separate incident, NATO jets escorted three Russian warplanes out of Estonian airspace, highlighting continued provocations near critical infrastructure across Europe. Despite denials from Russia regarding intentional wrongdoing, European authorities have been cautious in disclosing detailed accounts of such incidents, fueling speculations on the motives behind these airspace violations.
