“Fatal Shooting Shocks Puerto Banús Resort”

A fatal shooting took place in the upscale Costa del Sol resort of Puerto Banús, shocking British holidaymakers. The victim, a 25-year-old man, was shot at close range while seated at a cafe terrace, caught off guard while smoking a cigarette and talking on his mobile phone. Surveillance footage reportedly shows the gunman, disguised as a tourist and wearing a baseball cap, approaching the victim and firing multiple shots, even after the victim fell to the ground.

Despite immediate medical attention at Costa del Sol Hospital, the victim succumbed to his injuries. Police have confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old man in connection with the shooting. Authorities from the National Police in Malaga, responsible for the Marbella area where the incident occurred, stated that the investigation is ongoing without divulging further details.

Law enforcement refrained from disclosing the nationalities of the victim and the suspect. However, unconfirmed reports suggest that both individuals might hold Swedish passports, with one source indicating that the alleged shooter could be of Afghan descent.

The shooting occurred around 1:30 pm local time, amidst a bustling Puerto Banús filled with tourists, including British golfers enjoying the renowned coastal courses. The assailant is believed to have arrived by car before targeting the victim. Despite initial reports that the victim survived being shot multiple times and was hospitalized, authorities later confirmed his death around 8:15 pm local time.

Recent years have seen a surge in violent incidents around the Costa del Sol, prompting intensified police operations in the area during high season. These operations have included crackdowns on exclusive clubs, addressing concerns from locals about escalating violence resembling a lawless frontier. Notably, in a separate incident last year, football star Erling Haaland was inadvertently involved in a police operation at a Marbella beach club.

The region has faced challenges attributed to contract killers from Sweden, contributing to increased criminal activities in places like Marbella, often referred to as the “United Nations of Crime.” Past bomb incidents in 2018 led to the arrest of alleged hitmen in both Sweden and Marbella, shedding light on a criminal network with ties across Europe.

Law enforcement agencies have identified the Mocro Maffia as another criminal organization posing a threat in the Costa del Sol region. A recent case involved the arrest of a 17-year-old Belgian associated with the group, suspected of traveling to Fuengirola to carry out an assassination near a cannabis club. This incident marked the first instance in Spain where an underage individual was the prime suspect in a contract killing.
