In a chilling unsolved case, a farmer and his family were brutally killed in their own barn, sparking speculation that the murderer may have been hiding in the roof above their home for an extended period before the attack. The incident, known as the Hinterkaifeck Murders, remains a haunting mystery over a century later and continues to captivate the true crime community.
The gruesome events unfolded on a cold Friday night in March 1922 at a farmstead in the Bavarian village of Kaifeck. Andreas Gruber, 63, his wife Cäzilia, 72, their daughter Viktoria Gabriel, 35, along with Viktoria’s children Cäzilia, seven, and Josef, two, as well as their maid Maria Baumgartner, 44, were all tragically killed in a savage attack using a mattock.
The perpetrator lured the victims to the barn one by one before stacking their bodies and residing in their home multiple times. During this period, the assailant consumed their food, tended to the animals, and even used their fireplace. The bodies were only discovered days later by a neighbor when Cazilia failed to show up for school.
Prior to the horrific incident, the family had suspicions of something amiss, with Andreas finding an unexplained newspaper and noticing peculiar tracks leading towards their home in the snow. Furthermore, the maid had quit citing haunting experiences, which now appear to have been caused by the unknown intruder living in their midst.
Initially speculated as a botched robbery, the theory was dispelled when large sums of money were left untouched in the house. Despite numerous suspect names and theories circulating over the years, no arrests have been made in connection with the murders. Speculations include Viktoria’s missing husband, Karl, a potential relationship with the neighbor, Lorenz Schlittenbauer, and other rumored suspects like the Gump brothers, Peter Weber, and a German serial killer, Paul Mueller.
The investigation took a dark turn with claims of incest between Andreas and his daughter, adding another layer of complexity to the already perplexing case.
