One of the UK’s long-standing shoe retailers is set to close its high street store in Worcester after 153 years of operation. Robin Elt Shoes, established in 1872, will permanently shut down on January 10, 2026, due to financial challenges. However, the company will continue to operate its stores in Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes.
The managing director, Jenny Elt, expressed sadness over the closure, attributing it to the store’s lack of financial viability for the future. Worcester City Council acknowledged the impact of online shopping on traditional retail outlets and emphasized efforts to support local businesses, including a recent investment of £4.5 million in enhancing the city center’s appeal.
In a related development, charity shop chain Scope announced the closure of three additional high street branches in Morden, Torquay, and Washington. This move is part of the charity’s plan to shut down 77 stores this year due to financial challenges. Scope’s head of retail, Debbie Boylen, lamented the closures, highlighting the significant impact on staff and volunteers.
