“Fugitive Rapist Who Faked Death Sentenced in Scotland”

A convicted rapist who staged his own death to evade authorities in the United States has been sentenced to jail after being apprehended in Scotland.

Nicholas Rossi, who has consistently denied the rape allegations against him for 17 years, was finally captured in Scotland, 13 years after the crimes, following his escape from the US. Prior to his arrest, an online obituary falsely claimed that Rossi had passed away from cancer.

Rossi, now 38, received a five-year prison sentence after a judge in Salt Lake City, Utah, described the devastation caused by his actions in 2008 as a “trail of fear, pain, and destruction.” One of the survivors emotionally expressed in court the need for safety, accountability, and recognition of the lasting harm caused by the assaults.

Deputy District Attorney Brandon Simmons highlighted Rossi’s pattern of using rape to manipulate women and emphasized the threat he posed to community safety due to his history of failed relationships.

During the trial, Rossi chose not to testify and, when given the opportunity to speak before sentencing, continued to assert his innocence, dismissing the victims’ accounts as lies.

Although convicted and jailed for one assault, Rossi is awaiting sentencing for another rape incident in Utah from 2008. A decade passed before Utah authorities linked Rossi to the crimes through DNA evidence, part of their efforts to clear a backlog of rape kits.

After being extradited back to the US in January 2024, Rossi, known by various aliases, including claiming to be an Irish orphan named Arthur Knight, faced the consequences of his actions in court. Despite his defense attorney’s arguments, he was found guilty of the rape charge and sentenced accordingly.
