After being released on parole, Bittaker and Norris reunited in Los Angeles in 1979 to carry out their gruesome plan. Over a period of several months, they abducted over 20 female hitchhikers as preparation for their killing spree. Eventually, the pair kidnapped at least five teenage girls, subjecting them to unimaginable torture using tools like screwdrivers and pliers, earning them the chilling moniker ‘The Toolbox Killers’.
Their reign of terror in the San Gabriel mountains of southern California between June and October 1979 left a trail of devastation. The victims, aged between 13 and 18, included Lucinda Lynn Schaefer, Andrea Joy Hall, Jackie Doris Gilliam, Jacqueline Leah Lamp, and Shirley Lynette Ledford. Tragically, the bodies of Schaefer and Hall were never recovered.
The murders were brutal and barbaric, with the killers inflicting severe physical and emotional torment on their victims. Shirley Lynette Ledford, the final victim, endured harrowing abuse before being strangled to death with a wire coat hanger. Their crimes came to light when Norris confided in a friend, leading to their arrest.
Norris cooperated with authorities, resulting in a lengthy prison sentence, while Bittaker faced the death penalty. However, Bittaker passed away in 2019 from natural causes before his sentence was carried out. Norris also died of natural causes later that year.
