A savage attacker left a woman fighting for her life and her friend dead in a bedroom before calmly rejoining concerned neighbors outside the crime scene. Nearly 23 years later, the survivor of the brutal assault, who sustained 20 stab wounds, worries about encountering the assailant on the streets of County Cork in Ireland if he is released from prison.
The horrific incident took place in Cork when Peter Whelan, then 20, was expelled from a pub for attempting to assault a barman with a glass ashtray. On the same night, Nichola Sweeney, who had just returned home from work, was with her friend Sinead O’Leary when the attacker, unknown to them, barged into the Sweeney family residence.
Whelan launched a ferocious assault on Sinead, punching her multiple times before viciously stabbing her 20 times, one knife breaking from the force. As Nichola pleaded for mercy, Whelan turned his aggression towards her, stabbing her 11 times, including a fatal blow to the heart. Sinead managed to barricade herself in a bathroom as Whelan fled the scene, only to return later to guide the authorities to the crime scene.
Whelan, showing no remorse for his heinous acts, confessed to Nichola’s murder and the attempted murder of Sinead. Initially sentenced to 15 years (later reduced to 11) for the attempted murder, he is now serving a life sentence for Nichola’s murder. Despite being granted supervised day releases, he is reportedly preparing to seek parole again.
Expressing her apprehensions, Sinead emphasized the need for an exclusion order to prevent Whelan from coming near them or Nichola’s family if released. Concerns have also been raised about Whelan’s potential danger to society, with fears that he could reoffend if not properly monitored.
Nichola’s brother, Sean, shared the anguish of informing his parents about the tragedy, expressing grave concerns about Whelan’s lack of remorse and the possibility of further violence. The Parole Board declined to comment on the specific case in response to inquiries about Whelan’s potential release.
