Hundreds of tourists have flocked to Spain to witness the solar eclipse happening on Wednesday. However, the event is occurring during a period of high temperatures and increased wildfire risks in Spain, causing concerns for authorities striving to prevent any fire damages resulting from the surge in astrotourism.
Virginia Barcones, the secretary general for civil protection and emergencies at Spain’s Interior Ministry, highlighted the need to limit activities that could potentially spark fires due to the challenging wildfire season in Spain. Over 603,000 acres of land have already been consumed by around 400 fires this year, as reported by the European Forest Fire Information System.
To mitigate the risk of additional fires, authorities are deploying 35,000 officers to monitor large outdoor gatherings during the eclipse. Spain offers an ideal viewing spot for the celestial event, with the narrow path of totality crossing regions such as northern Russia, eastern Greenland, western Iceland, northeastern Portugal, and a significant portion of northern Spain, where approximately 15 million people reside.
Only individuals within the path of totality will witness the full eclipse, while those in Canada will experience a partial eclipse. Authorities advise using eclipse glasses for eye protection. This solar eclipse is the first visible from mainland Spain in 120 years, attracting a surge in travel activities.
Special measures have been put in place by Spanish authorities to manage the expected crowds for the eclipse. The influx of tourists has led to a significant rise in searches for accommodations along the eclipse’s path, notably in Valencia, Spain. The economic impact study indicates that the eclipse is projected to contribute over 347 million euros to Spain’s economy.
Despite ongoing wildfires and heat waves, the enthusiasm for the eclipse remains high among travelers. Professor Jan Cami from Western University notes that witnessing the eclipse is a mesmerizing natural spectacle that draws people from various backgrounds. The eclipse is expected to usher in substantial revenue for Spain while setting the stage for upcoming eclipses in the next few years, offering exciting opportunities for astrotourism.
