“Lidl to Shake Up Mobile Market with Budget Phone Plans”

Lidl, known for its budget-friendly offerings, is planning to enter the mobile phone market, challenging major networks with cost-effective plans. To access these deals, customers will need a Lidl Plus account. This strategic move is part of a substantial £600 million investment initiative by the supermarket chain, which not only involves launching mobile services but also includes the opening of 50 new stores nationwide.

Following in the footsteps of other non-traditional players in the telecom industry like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl is expanding its services beyond its traditional supermarket offerings. While already offering similar phone plans in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, Lidl is eyeing potential expansion into the UK, US, France, and Spain.

Partnering with 1GLOBAL communications provider, Lidl’s parent company, Schwarz Group, will operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), allowing Lidl to provide mobile plans using existing infrastructure rather than developing its own network. This move aligns with Schwarz Group’s broader digital strategy, which includes investments in tech ventures such as cloud computing, cybersecurity, and AI startups.

The supermarket chain’s expansion plans also include the opening of more than 50 new stores in the coming year, creating around 2,000 job opportunities. Some of the locations for the new stores include Abbots Langley, Warrington, and Thornbury. Ryan McDonnell, CEO of Lidl GB, emphasized the company’s commitment to driving regional growth and creating employment opportunities while offering affordable and healthy food choices to consumers.

The investment in 1GLOBAL will see Schwarz Group acquiring a 9.9% stake in the company, which has existing telecom licenses and partnerships across multiple countries. This strategic move signifies Schwarz Group’s commitment to its digital transformation and expansion into new markets, potentially intensifying competition for established telecom providers in terms of pricing and convenience.

Employment minister Kate Dearden praised Lidl’s investment for creating thousands of quality jobs with fair wages, enhancing living standards across various communities.
