Nicky Henderson remains calm as he looks ahead to the much-anticipated showdown between Constitution Hill and up-and-comer The New Lion this Saturday. Constitution Hill, previously undefeated in ten races, faced setbacks last season, including a fall at the Champion Hurdle and Aintree races, as well as a fifth-place finish at Punchestown Champion Hurdle.
Henderson recently shared that Constitution Hill underwent thorough assessments, including a visit to an equine vision specialist, to ensure his readiness for upcoming races. Despite his recent challenges, Constitution Hill is listed as the third favorite at 5-1 for the next year’s Champion Hurdle, trailing behind Willie Mullins’ mare Lossiemouth and The New Lion, the main rival set to compete in the BetMGM Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle.
The upcoming clash will feature top contenders, including the Turners Novices’ Hurdle victor The New Lion, Willie Mullins’ Anzadam, and the reigning Champion Hurdle champion Golden Ace. Coral’s odds stand at 11-8 for both Constitution Hill and The New Lion, with Anzadam at 3-1, Golden Ace at 20-1, and Nemean Lion at 33-1.
Henderson expressed confidence in Constitution Hill’s preparation, stating that the horse is in a better state compared to the previous year. With positive training sessions under their belt, Henderson and jockey Nico de Boinville are gearing up for the challenge ahead. The team is set to travel to Newcastle for the race, ensuring that Constitution Hill is accompanied by a suitable training partner.
As the excitement builds for the upcoming event, Henderson mentioned the last-minute addition of Nemean Lion to the list of competitors. Despite considering additional strategies, the focus remains on the upcoming race, with Henderson planning to be present at Newbury while the owner, Michael Buckley, attends the race at Newcastle.
