A firm in the construction industry has gone into administration, jeopardizing more than 400 jobs. Caldwell Construction Limited, established in 2007, has enlisted administrators from PKF Littlejohn Advisory. The company, specializing in groundworks and civil engineering, operates from offices in Stoke-on-Trent and Warrington, Cheshire.
Paul Smith, a Partner at PKF Littlejohn Advisory UK LLP, highlighted the tough trading environment in the construction sector due to rising costs, project delays, and market volatility. Despite a turnover of £58.4 million last year, Caldwell’s operational profit was under £1 million. Smith noted that recent pressures intensified financial difficulties, straining cash flow and operations.
Efforts by the PKF Littlejohn Advisory team to explore options and solutions with Caldwell’s management proved fruitless, leading to the company’s inability to sustain trading without insolvency proceedings. Joint Administrator Oliver Collinge confirmed the decision to place Caldwell into administration and emphasized the immediate focus on supporting employees and stakeholders.
In a separate incident, Consumer Energy Solutions in south Wales also collapsed into administration, impacting nearly 300 employees. The energy provider, with sites in Swansea and Rhondda Cynon Taf, abruptly ceased trading, leaving staff distressed. The company cited the termination of the UK Government-backed Energy Company Obligation 4 scheme as a reason for the restructuring and job losses. The initiative, aiding homeowners in energy-efficient upgrades, is set to conclude this year.
The appointment of joint administrators for Consumer Energy Solutions Limited was announced, stating the company’s inability to continue operations for customers. The administration solely involves Consumer Energy Solutions Limited and not other entities within the City Energy Group.
