The family of a woman who tragically passed away in a scalding bathtub with her boyfriend has voiced concerns about the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death.
Ana Carolina Silva, a 41-year-old nail salon owner, and Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, a 37-year-old military officer, were discovered lifeless inside a motel room in Sao Jose, Brazil, on August 11.
Having celebrated their daughter’s fourth birthday at a food park and later enjoying a night out at a nightclub, the couple dropped off their child at Jeferson’s sister’s house before checking into the Dallas Motel after midnight. They were last seen around 11:30 pm, as per local reports.
When the couple failed to collect their daughter the next day, family members became worried, leading to a distressing find by the police. The pair were found deceased, without any visible injuries, in the bathtub of their motel room where the water temperature had risen to 50C, with a high setting on a space heater.
Following a toxicology report that indicated traces of cocaine and significantly elevated blood alcohol levels in both individuals, investigators concluded that they had likely passed out in the scalding water.
According to Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza, the cause of death was external poisoning, resulting in a heatstroke, severe dehydration, thermal collapse, organ failure, and ultimately death.
The report highlighted that the combination of substances, alcohol, and extreme heat heightened the risk. Sixteen forensic tests conducted by the Civil Police ruled out potential causes of death such as electric shock, drowning, carbon monoxide poisoning, or foul play.
Despite the findings, Ana’s family suspects foul play and is demanding a thorough investigation to uncover the truth. They vehemently refute claims that she was a drug user and express concerns about possible forced ingestion or poisoning.
In response to the police’s closure of the case, the family emphasized their commitment to seeking justice and preserving Ana’s memory, rejecting any unjust speculation tarnishing her story.
Chief inspector Felipe Simao remarked in a press conference that the couple led an active social life but were not known to have a drug habit. He also mentioned that there was no history of violence in their relationship.
Friends described Jeferson and Ana Carolina, who had been together for nearly two decades, as devoted parents and sociable individuals. Following the tragic incident, their daughter is now under the care of relatives.
