An explosion on a boat in the popular Costa del Sol resort of Fuengirola has resulted in eight individuals sustaining injuries. Three of the victims are facing severe injuries and have been transported to a hospital for treatment. The incident occurred as the boat, commonly referred to as a tourist boat in the local area, was departing from the marina in the Spanish town.
There is uncertainty regarding the presence of British nationals among the injured. Firefighters at the marina were seen extinguishing the flames on the boat with hoses from land after locals on jet skis and other boats aided the passengers and attempted to put out the fire.
The emergency services were alerted around 12:20 pm following the eruption of a black plume of smoke that was visible from nearby beaches. The cause of the explosion remains unknown.
A fisherman in the vicinity described the boat as being constructed of polyester, a material highly flammable when in contact with fuel. The boat eventually sank due to the fire. The area where the incident occurred has been cordoned off for investigation purposes.
The Fuengirola Town Hall issued a statement confirming the response of the Rescue and Lifesaving Service, Fire Department, Local Police, and Civil Guard to the boat fire. A total of eight individuals were onboard, all of whom sustained injuries, with three in critical condition. The Andalusian Ports Agency is monitoring the situation closely for any necessary anti-spill measures.
In a similar incident last year, four British nationals were rescued from a motor yacht that caught fire and sank off the Menorcan capital Mahon. The blaze originated in the engine room and quickly spread, prompting coastguards to take preventive measures before the boat sank.
Incidents involving boat explosions have been reported in other regions as well, with individuals sustaining injuries in Majorca and Torrevieja. Authorities have described some of these incidents as accidents, with investigations ongoing. Good Samaritans have been instrumental in providing assistance during these emergencies, demonstrating quick and compassionate responses to those in distress.
