“Asda Struggles with Sales Decline Despite Turnaround Efforts”

Asda, a leading supermarket chain, faced a significant challenge with a 7% decline in sales. Industry analysts from NielsenIQ reported a drop in Asda’s market share from 12.2% to 10.9% over the last three months.

After being acquired by billionaire brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa along with TDR Capital in 2021, Asda has been striving to overcome its struggles. Under the leadership of executive chairman Allan Leighton, who successfully navigated a turnaround in the 1990s, Asda is making efforts to regain its market position.

Despite announcing plans for substantial price reductions earlier this year, Asda experienced a sharp sales decrease. The company aimed to be 5% to 10% cheaper than its main competitors, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons, by leveraging a significant budget for discounts.

However, recent data from NielsenIQ revealed that Asda was the sole major supermarket to witness a year-on-year sales decline in the last three months. In contrast, Tesco and Sainsbury’s saw sales growth of 4.5% and 5.2%, respectively. Aldi is also closely competing with Asda with a market share of 10.3%.

An Asda spokesperson acknowledged the challenges but expressed confidence in the ongoing strategy. The company highlighted improvements in availability both online and in-store, emphasizing its commitment to offering competitive prices compared to rivals and positioning itself as the UK’s most affordable traditional supermarket.

In a bid to attract more customers, Asda has launched a Christmas advertising campaign featuring The Grinch. This move coincided with NielsenIQ’s projection that households would spend a total of £20 billion on Christmas groceries this year, with spending expected to peak at £5.7 billion next week.

Mike Watkins, head of retailer and business insight at NielsenIQ, noted that consumers are focusing on cost-effective choices this holiday season, making strategic savings on regular purchases to indulge in festive treats for their families in December.
