Amazon to End Support for Older Kindles, Urges Users to Upgrade

Amazon has declared that support will soon end for several older Kindle models, prompting users to consider upgrading to newer devices. Effective May 20, 2026, devices such as Kindle 5 and Kindle Paperwhite (1st Generation) will no longer be able to download new titles from the Kindle Store. While existing books will remain accessible, no new content can be purchased or added after the specified date.

Amazon has confirmed that affected models, released in 2012 or earlier, will no longer support new content purchases. The company is proactively notifying users via email and offering a 20% discount on select new Kindle models, along with a £15 eBook credit, to facilitate the transition to updated devices.

The impacted models include the Kindle 1st Generation (2007), Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009, 2010), Kindle Keyboard (2010), Kindle 4 (2011), Kindle Touch (2011), Kindle 5 (2012), and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012).

Users with affected Kindles can still access downloaded books but will not be able to acquire new content after the specified date. Deregistering or factory resetting these devices will render them unusable.

Considering the upcoming changes, upgrading to newer Kindle models may be advisable, particularly with the recent launch of Amazon’s latest Kindle Scribe devices in the UK. Introduced on April 8, the new models are slimmer, faster, and include a version with a color display. Prices for the Kindle Scribe start at £449.99, while the color-display Kindle Scribe Colorsoft begins at £569.99.
