The United Kingdom experienced its highest temperature of the year on Thursday, hitting 38.1 degrees Celsius in west London, according to the national weather service, amidst an ongoing period of intense heat across Europe. The Met Office reported that this temperature exceeded the previous high of 38 degrees Celsius recorded on June 26. However, it fell short of the UK’s August record of 38.5 degrees Celsius set in 2003.
Both Britain and France are currently in their fifth heatwave of the year, starting from May. The recent scorching temperatures in 2026 have broken records with four days registering temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius or higher, matching the two days that reached 38 degrees Celsius in 2022.
Meanwhile, France saw even hotter temperatures, nearing 41 degrees Celsius in various regions from Aquitaine in the southwest to the Rhone River valley in the east, as reported by the French national weather service. The peak of the intense heat is anticipated to move away from Britain and France on Friday and gradually diminish over the weekend.
The ongoing summer heatwaves have highlighted the lack of infrastructure in both Britain and France to handle such extreme weather conditions, with air conditioning being a rarity outside of commercial establishments. In Britain, healthcare workers, including nurses, have been affected by heat exhaustion due to inadequate cooling systems in hospitals housed in aging buildings.
The dry spell in Europe has led to widespread droughts, causing crops to wither and rivers to dry up, putting immense strain on water resources for residential, agricultural, and environmental purposes. Southern Water in Britain has requested a rare drought order to prohibit non-essential water usage in certain areas due to the severe lack of rainfall threatening water supplies.
As the land continues to parch without significant rainfall in sight, authorities in Britain and France remain on high alert for wildfires. England and Wales have already seen over a thousand wildfires this year, emphasizing the need for the UK to adapt to the changing climate.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is contemplating a ban on disposable barbecues to prevent further wildfires amid the prolonged heatwave. He emphasized the need to discourage outdoor barbecue usage during this period of heightened fire risk.
French firefighters are also facing challenges, with demands for increased staff and resources to handle extreme weather events. Recent fires in different regions of France have highlighted the urgency for better preparedness in the face of escalating climate conditions.
