Trump Orders Pentagon to Cut South Korea Military Drills

U.S. President Donald Trump has directed the Pentagon to reduce planned joint military exercises with South Korea. Trump cited the need to foster good relations with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and mentioned that North Korea has been cooperative and respectful during his presidency. He expressed concerns about the cost and perceived hostility of the exercises towards North Korea.

Trump stated that despite it being too late to cancel the exercises, he instructed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to significantly scale them back. He also mentioned that South Korea declined to assist in efforts to denuclearize Iran when he approached them.

This decision echoes previous attempts by Trump to halt these joint exercises, which he has criticized as provocative in the past. While South Korea’s Defense Ministry has confirmed that the exercises started as scheduled, the country’s presidential Blue House is reviewing Trump’s directive and hopes that the amicable relationship between the U.S. and North Korea will lead to constructive dialogue for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

The joint military training involving 18,000 South Korean soldiers was intended to enhance readiness against potential threats from North Korea. Despite the reduction in exercises, the alliance between the U.S. and South Korea remains committed to coordinating on defense and military activities.

North Korea has recently resumed ballistic missile testing, a move condemned by Trump. The decision to scale back the joint exercises has drawn criticism from Democratic Senator Mark Kelly, who believes it is short-sighted and a mistake. North Korea has issued warnings against the U.S. and South Korea, labeling the drills as preparations for aggressive actions.

Trump’s interactions with Kim Jong-un have been a significant aspect of his foreign policy, with previous meetings aimed at addressing North Korea’s nuclear program. Despite the recent decision to reduce military exercises, Trump has indicated an interest in continuing discussions with North Korea.
