The globally followed romantic tale of two bald eagles has reached its conclusion. Jackie, one part of the eagle duo whose experiences and challenges in raising offspring captivated millions of viewers via a live camera feed in Southern California’s Big Bear Valley, passed away on Monday following an extended period of medical care.
The Ojai Raptor Center, where Jackie was under treatment, shared the news of her demise on Instagram. She was 14 years old. Despite intensive care and the efforts of the veterinary team and specialists, Jackie’s health continued to worsen in the past few days, leading to her passing.
The loss of Jackie has evoked an outpouring of affection from fans around the world. Many expressed their deep connections with Jackie, recalling moments of watching her protect her eggs with strength and devotion. Some shared how observing Jackie and her partner Shadow had a positive impact on their lives during challenging times.
Jackie was likely the first eaglet hatched in Big Bear Valley in 2012, according to historical records from the forest service cited by Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV). FOBBV introduced its initial bald eagle nest camera in 2015, followed by a second camera in 2021. Jackie rose to public prominence in 2017 when she and her former mate, Mr. B, settled near the first camera.
In 2018, Shadow emerged as a contender for Jackie’s affections, displacing Mr. B and becoming her new partner. Together, they garnered attention in 2023 when their struggles to safeguard their eggs amid a snowstorm captivated audiences worldwide. Their enduring bond, despite facing challenges like territorial disputes and losses due to predators and harsh weather, resonated with many.
Although Jackie will no longer grace the eagle nest cameras, her legacy endures. FOBBV recently announced the successful procurement of the 63-acre habitat where Jackie and Shadow resided, preventing a luxury housing development that could have harmed the environment. The initiative received overwhelming support, with fans worldwide contributing over $10 million US towards the cause.
Bald eagles, once on the brink of extinction in the U.S., have rebounded due to conservation efforts, prompting their removal from the endangered species list in 2007. FOBBV continues to provide updates on other eagles in the area, noting that Sandy and Luna, the last offspring of Jackie and Shadow, were last observed on camera before embarking on their independent journeys.
Despite the loss of Jackie, Shadow remained faithful to their nest and territory. However, sightings of a new female eagle, KD-1, near the nest have sparked hopes for new beginnings.
