“Canadian Filmmaker Matt Johnson Discusses Latest Biopic on Anthony Bourdain”

Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson appeared relaxed during an interview with CBC News at Toronto’s Revue Cinema, just four days before his wedding and eight days ahead of commencing his next movie project. Johnson discussed his latest film, “Tony,” a biopic centered on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain.

Despite Bourdain’s posthumous acclaim following his tragic death in 2018, Johnson expressed ease in narrating his story, admitting he initially had no attachment to Bourdain’s public persona. The decision to delve into Bourdain’s life came after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who portrays the lead role in the movie.

Sessa, aged 23, was cast as the young Bourdain, with Johnson crafting a script inspired by Bourdain’s memoir, “Kitchen Confidential,” focusing on his formative years as a chef during a summer in Provincetown, Mass. The director and lead actor intentionally avoided immersing themselves in Bourdain’s extensive body of work to maintain an authentic portrayal of the chef’s early struggles and aspirations.

By honing in on Bourdain’s youth, Johnson sidestepped the pressure of depicting the more established Bourdain familiar to many fans. The film delves into the complexities of Bourdain’s upbringing, his relationships, and his transition into adulthood, resonating with the challenges faced by young men.

Johnson emphasized that the movie’s narrative presents Bourdain’s story in a relatable light, aiming to provide insight to his admirers. “Tony,” which premieres in Canadian theaters on August 14, captures a pivotal chapter in Bourdain’s life, showcasing his journey from a novice cook to a culinary icon under the mentorship of a seasoned chef in Provincetown.

The filmmaker highlighted the collaborative process between himself, Sessa, and the spirit of Bourdain in bringing the story to life, fostering a sense of connection and understanding with the revered chef.
