British authorities have reportedly traveled to Portugal to interrogate acquaintances of Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case. The individuals in question, Elke and Bernhard Piro, were extensively questioned in Faro. Elke, a German national, expressed her belief that Brueckner was involved in Madeleine’s disappearance and hopes for his trial in the UK.
Elke shared that she thinks Brueckner may have encountered Madeleine accidentally and committed a dreadful act before fleeing the scene. She regretted ever associating with Brueckner after learning about his criminal past. The Metropolitan Police, led by Sir Mark Rowley, have hinted at the possibility of Brueckner facing extradition to the UK if new evidence surfaces.
The ongoing Operation Grange, the Met’s investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance, seems to be gaining momentum following the lack of progress in the German investigation. The Met declined to comment on the recent developments, citing a policy of not discussing active inquiries.
According to The Sun, Met detectives collaborated with Portuguese authorities to question the Piros in Faro. The couple had a long history with Brueckner, having first met him in 1995 and maintaining contact until 2018. Bernhard described Brueckner as a sociopath and expressed regret over accommodating him in their home near Praia da Luz.
Elke revealed Brueckner’s dual nature, mentioning his gentle side alongside erratic behaviors fueled by alcohol. This recent development marks another step in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
