A group of approximately 100 people had assembled in Chaung U township in central Myanmar on Monday to mark the Thadingyut festival, which signifies the end of Buddhist Lent, when the bombs were detonated by the government.
Myanmar’s military junta took control in 2021, instigating a civil conflict. Despite losing authority over more than half of the nation, the army has been reclaiming territories through intense aerial assaults.
The specific area targeted is a crucial battleground where clashes with armed opposition factions, such as the People’s Defence Force (PDF) – a coalition of volunteer militias formed post-coup, have been ongoing.
These groups also manage local governance in their controlled territories. An official recounted the attack that occurred during the Monday gathering to BBC Burmese.
Despite attempts to disperse the protests, the bombardment was swift, with the bombs deployed within a seven-minute timeframe, as per the witness.
The witness, who sustained leg injuries in the explosion, also mentioned observing casualties near him during the tragic event.
Local residents informed the broadcaster that identifying the victims following the horrendous attack was challenging.
A woman involved in organizing the event, though not present during the incident, shared details from the subsequent funerals, describing the harrowing scenes of people still collecting body parts.
Reports from BBC Burmese indicate that the military junta has resorted to using paramotors, motorized paragliders, due to the lack of conventional military aircraft.
Amnesty International condemned the use of such tactics against civilians, labeling it a concerning pattern that underscores the urgent need for safeguarding the populace in Myanmar.
The ruling authorities in Myanmar have faced challenges in acquiring military resources due to severe international sanctions. Nevertheless, China and Russia persist in supplying advanced drones and military technology, augmenting the regime’s combat capabilities.
The peaceful candlelight vigil held on Monday aimed to protest against military conscription and the forthcoming election, while also advocating for the release of political detainees, including the deposed democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
