The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in close to 250 postcode areas across England and Wales today. This action follows a series of winter weather alerts issued by the Met Office for the upcoming week. Approximately half a million households are set to benefit from these payments, receiving £25 each to assist with heating expenses.
The recent activation covers a total of 246 postcode areas, encompassing regions like Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. Eligible recipients can access the full list of postcodes qualifying for today’s payments through an interactive map provided.
These payments specifically target individuals in England and Wales who receive various benefits. In Northern Ireland, a similar program exists, while in Scotland, support for heating costs is allocated annually, not tied to specific cold weather spells.
Since the start of winter, Cold Weather Payments have been triggered for 697 postcode areas, with 18 districts receiving two payments due to extended cold weather periods. The latest round of payments is expected to reach around 532,000 households, with Greater Manchester alone accounting for approximately 336,000 recipients. The total expenditure for today’s Cold Weather Payments is estimated at £13.3 million.
In England and Wales, payments are activated when an area is forecasted to experience temperatures below zero for seven consecutive days. Meteorologists are anticipating a cold spell leading into the New Year, with subzero temperatures anticipated in many regions.
An estimated 3.9 million individuals qualify for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP scheme, with 1.2 million of these recipients receiving Pensions Credit. Eligibility for these payments is based on various factors, and detailed information on eligibility criteria can be found on the GOV.UK website.
Payments of £25 are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, identified by a payment reference including the recipient’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. Applicants do not need to apply for these payments.
The activation of Cold Weather Payments in different regions is determined by specific weather stations, with varying estimates of eligible households in each area.
