A tragic incident unfolded as a couple celebrating their daughter’s fourth birthday passed away in a scalding motel bathtub after a night of revelry. Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, 37, and Ana Carolina Silva, 41, had enjoyed festivities at a food park and indulged in drinks before visiting a nightclub. Following their celebrations, the military police officer and nail salon owner entrusted their child to Jeferson’s sister and checked into the Dallas Motel in São José, Brazil’s Santa Catarina state.
Concern arose when the couple failed to collect their daughter the next day, prompting relatives to contact the authorities. Upon investigation, the lifeless bodies of Jeferson and Ana were found in the motel bathroom. Analysis of the hotel room, CCTV footage, and the couple’s vehicle led crime scene investigators to determine that the pair had passed out in a bathtub filled with 50°C water while a space heater emitted heat into the room.
A toxicology report revealed elevated alcohol levels and traces of cocaine in their systems. According to Globo G1, Brazil’s Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza stated that the deaths were caused by exogenous poisoning, resulting in heatstroke, severe dehydration, thermal collapse, organ failure, and eventual death. After conducting 16 forensic tests ruling out other potential causes like electric shock or foul play, investigators attributed the fatalities to heat exposure.
Described as devoted parents and sociable individuals by friends, the couple, who had been together for almost two decades, had no history of violence. Ana Carolina’s family disputed claims of her being a habitual drug user, suggesting a possible forced ingestion of cocaine due to her physical constitution’s incompatibility with the substance, especially when combined with alcohol.
Tragically, the couple’s daughter is now orphaned as a consequence of the fatal turn their birthday celebration took. In a separate incident, Alexandra Săsărman, a student, was found deceased on her 22nd birthday in a hot tub at her family’s cabin, suspected to have suffered a fatal cardiac arrest due to the high water temperature.
