“Florida Executes Man Convicted in Neighbor’s Murder”

An individual who refused allegations of sexually assaulting and causing the death of his neighbor 27 years ago faced execution on death row today.

Norman Mearle Grim Jr, aged 65, was convicted of the sexual battery and first-degree murder of Cynthia Campbell, despite maintaining his innocence in court. He received a lethal injection on death row in Florida today, marking the state’s 15th execution of the year.

When asked if he wanted to make a final statement, he responded with a simple “No sir.” Grim was then administered the lethal injection, leading to heavy breathing and slight twitching before being pronounced dead, almost three decades after the death of Ms. Campbell.

Following the disappearance of the young woman in 1998, her body, showing signs of severe trauma, was discovered in waters near the Pensacola Bay Bridge in Florida by a fisherman.

Prosecutors detailed that Ms. Campbell had sustained multiple injuries to her face and head, consistent with blunt-force trauma, as well as 11 stab wounds to her chest, seven of which directly impacted her heart. Grim was linked to the crime through DNA evidence.

Despite his denial of the charges, Grim was found guilty after a trial in 2000 and subsequently sentenced to death that same year, the execution of which occurred today, 27 years later.

Since the reinstatement of the death penalty by the US Supreme Court in 1976, Florida has witnessed a record number of executions this year, surpassing previous annual totals. Florida leads in executions this year, followed by Texas and Alabama with five each.

Upon the signing of a death warrant and setting of an execution date, inmates have the opportunity to appeal to the Florida Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court. Grim did not receive any visitors on Tuesday and declined meeting with a spiritual adviser, as reported by authorities.

In the US, 40 individuals have been executed through court orders this year, with at least 18 others scheduled for execution by the end of 2025 and into the following year.

Florida has seen the highest number of executions this year, followed by Texas and Alabama, each with five executions. Two more executions are slated for next month in Florida under death warrants issued by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.
