President Donald Trump has announced that progress on the initial phase of his 20-point peace plan to end the conflict in Gaza is expected this week. Urging swift action, he emphasized the importance of all parties moving quickly.
Earlier in the week, Trump presented the “Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict,” outlining a 20-point strategy that includes the release of Israeli captives.
Hamas has shown willingness to engage with certain aspects of the peace proposal, such as releasing hostages and transitioning Gaza’s administration to Palestinian technocrats. However, the group seeks further discussions on additional issues and has expressed readiness to commence immediate negotiations.
Through his Truth Social platform, Trump shared positive developments in discussions with Hamas and various countries worldwide. These talks aim to secure the release of hostages, cease the conflict in Gaza, and achieve long-sought peace in the Middle East. Technical teams are set to meet in Egypt to finalize details, with the first phase expected to conclude within the week.
Despite these advancements, Hamas has not addressed crucial demands related to disarmament and its role in governing Gaza. Trump emphasized that while the agreement is largely settled, there may still be minor adjustments.
Hamas has agreed to transfer control of Gaza to an independent body of Palestinian leaders, citing this decision as a reflection of Palestinian and Arab consensus.
The group has underscored the importance of a unified national stance and adherence to international laws and resolutions concerning Gaza’s future and the rights of the Palestinian people, as outlined in Trump’s proposal.
Trump praised Hamas for its readiness for lasting peace and called for an immediate halt to Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. However, subsequent Israeli attacks resulted in numerous casualties, with Gaza’s Ministry of Health reporting a significant death toll and injuries within a day.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, over 200 journalists and media personnel have lost their lives in Gaza since early October. Additionally, Israel has restricted independent journalists from entering Gaza to verify reported casualties.
