“David Lammy Slams Farage’s ‘Pound Shop Patriotism’ as Racist”

David Lammy criticized Nigel Farage’s brand of patriotism as detrimental to Britain, labeling it as “pound shop patriotism.” Lammy condemned Farage’s proposal to revoke indefinite leave to remain status, even for those already granted it, calling it racist. Speaking at the Labour Party Conference, Lammy emphasized that Farage’s policies do not align with British values despite his outward display of nationalism.

Lammy denounced the scheme to potentially deport individuals from diverse backgrounds who hold indefinite leave to remain, asserting that it is inherently racist and goes against the principles of inclusivity and respect. He emphasized the importance of promoting genuine patriotism that uplifts society rather than the divisive rhetoric espoused by Farage.

Encouraging the party to seek inspiration from global progressive movements, Lammy highlighted instances where parties, initially trailing in polls, ultimately secured victory by staying true to their values. He cited examples from Australia, Canada, and Norway to illustrate the potential for success when embracing progressive ideals.

The proposal put forth by Reform UK to abolish Indefinite Leave to Remain could jeopardize the residency status of hundreds of thousands of individuals in the UK if the party assumes power. Labour leader Keir Starmer criticized Farage’s plan, warning that it could lead to significant societal division and emphasized the need to challenge such policies in the interest of unity and community cohesion.
