Tennis icon Novak Djokovic has raised concerns regarding the controversy surrounding Jannik Sinner’s doping incident and subsequent suspension in early 2025. The Italian athlete accepted a three-month ban after testing positive for a banned substance twice in 2024.
Initially, Sinner escaped punishment when a panel determined that the presence of clostebol, an anabolic steroid, in his system was due to contamination during a massage by his coach. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) concluded that Sinner was not at fault for the positive tests in March 2024.
The ITIA defended its handling of Sinner’s case last year and refuted claims of preferential treatment. In February, Sinner reached a resolution with the World Anti-Doping Agency, which had contested the initial decision not to suspend him.
Following his three-month ban from February to May this year, the current world No. 2 strategically timed his suspension to participate in the French Open, which commenced in late May.
Djokovic, who lost to Sinner in the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon in July, shared his views on the situation during a comprehensive discussion with Piers Morgan, touching on various topics.
Expressing his surprise at the turn of events, Djokovic emphasized his belief in Sinner’s innocence, criticizing the handling of the case for its lack of transparency and suspicious timing of the ban between major tournaments.
Djokovic, known for his controversial stance on vaccination during the pandemic, clarified that he advocated for freedom of choice regarding Covid-19 vaccines.
