Shaun Murphy expressed strong dissatisfaction towards Matchroom for the scheduling of the Champion of Champions event on Monday. This frustration stemmed from his recent participation in China’s International Championship quarter-finals, just four days prior.
The Magician was unexpectedly placed in the opening match of the tournament and suffered a significant 4-1 defeat against Lei Peifan. Murphy, aged 43, mentioned that he was informed about his Monday fixture while returning from Nanjing, learning about the event’s order on the same morning.
Following his loss, Murphy criticized Matchroom’s handling of the tournament arrangements, emphasizing his disappointment in how he was treated. He voiced his concerns to ITV4, stating, “I conduct myself as professionally as I possibly can. I try and treat the game with an incredible amount of respect.”
Expressing his frustration further, Murphy described the situation as “nothing short of despicable,” pointing out the lack of communication and professionalism in the event’s organization. He highlighted the contrast with other players who had not participated in the recent China tournament but were scheduled to play later in the week.
In response to Murphy’s complaints, Matchroom released a statement acknowledging his frustrations and emphasizing their commitment to fair play and transparency. They explained that groupings were based on seeding and acknowledged the challenges of scheduling, promising to consider improvements for future events.
Meanwhile, on the opening day of the Champion of Champions, World No. 1 Judd Trump secured a 4-1 victory over Bai Yulu, advancing to face Lei later in the day. The tournament continued with exciting matches lined up for the following days, featuring top players in the snooker world.
