“Zohran Mamdani Makes History as NYC’s Youngest, First Muslim Mayor”

Zohran Mamdani emerged victorious in the recent New York City Mayoral election, securing over one million votes. At 34 years old, Mamdani is not only the city’s youngest mayor but also the first Muslim and South Asian to hold the position.

Set to take office in January, Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, an accomplished illustrator, is poised to become the city’s inaugural Gen Z First Lady at the age of 28. Born in Houston and raised in Dubai with Syrian-American roots, Rama exuded elegance at Mamdani’s victory celebration in Brooklyn, sporting a black lace dress and a hairstyle reminiscent of the iconic Audrey Hepburn.

The couple’s love story began on the dating app Hinge in 2021, leading to their engagement in October 2024 and a Nikkah ceremony in Dubai in December of the same year. They followed it up with a civil ceremony at Lower Manhattan’s City Hall in February.

Mamdani, the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani, represents a unique blend of artistic and academic backgrounds. Meanwhile, Rama, raised in Dubai and immersed in a glamorous upbringing, showcases her Arab heritage and artistic talents through her black and white illustrations on Instagram.

Anticipated to move into the historic Gracie Mansion next year, the couple will reside in one of Manhattan’s oldest surviving wooden properties, dating back to 1799.

As a Democratic Socialist, Mamdani has pledged to introduce progressive policies such as free bus services, rent freezes, reduced police presence, and increased taxes for the affluent and large corporations. In a bold declaration to his supporters, Mamdani emphasized his Muslim faith and socialist principles, refusing to apologize for his beliefs.

Directing strong words towards former President Trump, Mamdani urged him to pay attention, stating that New York City could lead the way in combating Trump’s influence. His impassioned speech resonated with the crowd, garnering enthusiastic cheers as they celebrated his historic victory.
