After six years, a woman who was reported missing by her husband was discovered “inside the walls” by the police.
Tina Satchwell was reported missing by her husband in 2017 in County Cork, Ireland. The unsettling incident has once again shocked the nation following the airing of a new documentary titled The Trial of Richard Satchwell on Virgin Media One.
Richard Satchwell, a truck driver from Leicester, pretended to be clueless about Tina’s whereabouts when he reported her missing to the police. He resided with Tina in Youghal, Cork, and falsely claimed that €26,000 in cash savings were also missing from the attic.
The last public sighting of Tina was at a car boot sale on March 19, 2017. However, Satchwell only reported her disappearance to the police on March 24, stating that he delayed the report due to an argument they had before she allegedly left.
Despite his public appeals for Tina’s return and declarations of love, suspicions were raised by Tina’s childhood friend and niece, Sarah Howard. She was alarmed by the fact that Tina’s dogs were left behind, as they were like her children.
Friends of Tina described Satchwell as a controlling husband, noting that Tina became isolated after moving into their Youghal home. Lorraine Howard, Tina’s half-sister, expressed that Tina felt trapped in the relationship.
In May of the same year, police began to suspect foul play in Tina’s disappearance. A search warrant was issued for the house, and electronic items were seized. However, it wasn’t until October 2023 that Tina’s skeletal remains were found hidden under the stairwell in the couple’s home.
Initially maintaining his innocence, Satchwell later claimed that Tina had charged at him with a chisel, leading to her accidental death in self-defense. He admitted to moving her body into a freezer before burying her under the stairs.
Despite being found guilty of murder after a five-week trial, Satchwell, with a history of previous convictions, including theft-related offenses, held onto his claims of innocence. Tina’s family expressed relief at the verdict but acknowledged that the truth of her final moments may never be fully known.
The family, while not harboring ill feelings towards the authorities, reflected on the lengthy process of finding Tina and the disturbing details that emerged during the trial. They expressed a sense of closure despite the lingering questions surrounding Tina’s tragic end.
