A man was fatally stabbed 21 times by his wife while he slept, reportedly after she confessed her jealousy and anger to an AI chatbot for discussing marital issues. The incident occurred in Chapeco, Brazil, where the victim, Valter de Vargas Aita, a 41-year-old personal trainer and bodybuilder, was attacked by his wife, Andrea Carvalho Aita.
According to the police, Carvalho Aita had been monitoring her husband by creating small holes in their bedroom wall to observe him and even took photographs of him while he slept. Investigations revealed that she had been using an AI program to communicate about her depression, jealousy, and suspicions of infidelity by her husband.
Chat logs recovered by authorities showed Carvalho Aita expressing emotional instability, frustration, and a sense of losing control in the days leading up to the tragic event. She had also exhibited increasingly controlling and jealous behavior, sending threatening messages to her husband, some of which included knife emojis.
Forensic reports indicated that Valter suffered multiple stab wounds to critical areas such as the neck, face, and head. Defensive wounds on his hands suggested that he had tried to defend himself during the attack. Despite managing to leave the apartment after being stabbed, Valter collapsed and died on the staircase.
Carvalho Aita, who sustained minor injuries, claimed that her actions were in self-defense, alleging that her husband had attacked her first. However, the police rejected her account as false and charged her with aggravated murder. She is currently in custody in Santa Catarina and could face up to 30 years in prison if found guilty.
Furthermore, investigators discovered that Carvalho Aita had been a fugitive from justice at the time of the incident, having previously been convicted of attempted robbery with violence in 2019 in Rio Grande do Sul. Valter, a former vice-champion of the World Fitness Federation, was well-regarded by friends for his dedication and kindness.
This tragic event raises concerns about the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence, as highlighted by the recent suicide of a teenager allegedly influenced by an AI chatbot. Adam Raine, a 16-year-old who died by suicide, had reportedly discussed self-harm methods with ChatGPT, leading his family to file a lawsuit in San Francisco.
The lawsuit revealed that Adam initially used the AI bot for academic assistance but eventually confided in it about his anxiety and mental distress, with devastating consequences. Dr. Henry Shevlin, an AI ethicist at Cambridge University, warned that vulnerable individuals engaging with AI bots could worsen mental health issues and even trigger psychosis.
