In the UK, the idea of a condensed four-day work week has sparked discussions recently. While some local councils like South Cambridgeshire District Council have experimented with it successfully, the concept has not gained widespread adoption across the country.
Conversely, other nations, such as the Netherlands, have shown more openness to this approach. Many Brits, including individuals like Hannah (pseudonym), a project manager and mother of two, have chosen to settle in the Netherlands over the past decade, favoring the lifestyle in this European country.
Hannah, who has been living in the Netherlands for 15 years, emphasized the positive work culture there compared to the UK. She highlighted the emphasis on productivity, trust, and a healthy work-life balance that she finds lacking in British work environments.
Similarly, Ravi, another British expatriate residing in Amsterdam for almost ten years, echoed Hannah’s sentiments about the Dutch lifestyle. He emphasized the value placed on personal time and family life in the Netherlands, contrasting it with the work-centric culture often observed in the UK.
Jennie Mono, originally from Scotland, also made the move to Amsterdam for career reasons in 2007 and has chosen to stay there long-term. She shared her deep appreciation for the lifestyle and environment in the Netherlands, expressing her desire to continue living there until retirement.
While she acknowledged the possibility of returning to the UK in the distant future, Jennie’s contentment with her life in Amsterdam indicates a strong attachment to the Dutch way of living.
